Formal yes, but with spontanaity!

 
This client wanted the look of elegance - boxwood, a laceleaf Japanese Maple, continuity. We installed a small vertical retaining wall with Fendt wallstone where boulders wouldn't work. A Serviceberry and a clump Red Maple show repetition and texture, without being overdone. Additionally, landscape lighting was installed as just that perfect final touch!
